World of Bacteria

Most of the life on Earth is invisible to the naked eye. While forests, animals and plants dominate our everyday perception of nature, the true rulers of our planet are microscopic organisms. More than three billion years ago bacteria were already thriving on Earth, shaping the chemistry of the oceans and atmosphere long before complex life appeared. In a famous essay titled Planet of the Bacteria, evolutionary biologist Stephen Jay Gould argued that bacteria are not a marginal form of life, but its most typical and enduring expression. From a biological perspective, we do not live on a planet of animals or plants — we live on a planet of bacteria.

About the Atlas

Bacteria inhabit nearly every environment imaginable: oceans, soils, deep underground rocks, hot springs, polar ice and the bodies of other organisms. Their extraordinary metabolic diversity drives the global cycles of carbon, nitrogen and other elements that sustain ecosystems across the planet. In many ways, the visible world of larger organisms rests upon a vast and ancient microbial foundation.

Yet bacteria are not only the hidden engineers of Earth’s biosphere. Some species are also among humanity’s most formidable biological adversaries. Recent global analyses suggest that bacterial infections are associated with roughly 7–8 million deaths worldwide each year, representing about one in eight deaths globally. More than half of these deaths are linked to just five bacterial pathogens: Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In addition, Mycobacterium tuberculosis—analysed separately in global disease statistics—accounts for roughly 1.3–1.5 million deaths annually, further illustrating the profound impact bacterial pathogens continue to have on human health.

World of Bacteria is an educational microbiology atlas that explores this remarkable microbial universe. The atlas presents laboratory photographs of medically important bacterial species, including colony morphology, microscopic appearance and other diagnostic characteristics. By bringing these microorganisms into view, the project invites readers to look more closely at the organisms that dominate our planet — and occasionally remind us of their power.

Project goals

World of Bacteria is being developed as a gradually expanding, online-accessible visual atlas of bacteria and other microorganisms, with an initial focus on medically important bacterial species. Its primary goal is to provide students, laboratory professionals and clinicians with realistic photographic documentation of how bacteria appear in routine microbiological practice.

In the first stage, each atlas page presents a concise species overview supported by four core laboratory photographs and explanatory captions. The project will then be expanded with additional images documenting species variability, diagnostic pitfalls, occurrence in clinical material and selected aspects of antimicrobial resistance.

A particular long-term aim is to make the visual manifestations of antimicrobial resistance more accessible to a wider educational audience. The project treats antibiotic resistance not only as a laboratory problem, but as one of the most urgent challenges in contemporary clinical microbiology and public health.

The project uses AI-assisted tools, including ChatGPT, to support text drafting, editing, translation and technical development. All scientific content, image selection and final editorial decisions remain under human supervision.
